Workshops for Teachers

The Hidden Culture of Girls Aggression and What Teachers Can Do About It

Most girls feel that teachers do care about all of their friendship issues and bullying; they just don’t know about them.  In this workshop, Dr. Jordan will help teachers understand the hidden culture of girls relationship aggressions, it’s costs to girls individually and as a community, and the needs girls have in the areas of emotional and social intelligences.  Teachers will take away new ideas and skills in areas such as:  giving girls permission, opportunities and the skills to handle conflicts directly and effectively; teaching girls to voice their emotions in healthy ways; handling teasing and “mean words”; using class meetings as a forum to handle issues immediately and effectively; teaching girls to speak with authority, not be afraid of making mistakes, brainstorm, collaborate, be a leader, build their “inner resumes”, and take responsibility for the learning community.

Creating a Caring Community in the Classroom

Experiential is the name of the game for this workshop.  Come ready to play and to look at kids and the kind of classroom environment they can create in a whole new way.  Dr. Jordan will show you how to help students create intentions for what they want in their classroom community and how to empower students to create more closeness, trust and respect with each other.  Participants will also learn creative ways to help their students develop a deeper understanding of each other as well as ways to handle conflicts and friendship drama.  This workshop promises to be fun, interactive and leaving you feeling empowered and invigorated.

The Class Meetings Primer

There is abundant research demonstrating that the connections between student and teacher and students with peers has a major impact on motivation and academic achievement.  Research also shows that a lack of “self determination” in their classroom interferes with learning, creativity and a feeling of self efficacy.Class meetings are a great tool to bring a class together, resolve conflicts, create intentions, create better understanding and closeness with each other, and turn over more responsibility for managing the class to students. In this workshop, Dr. Jordan will let teachers experience exercises and role plays that they can do with their students to both prepare the class to run class meetings and to keep them going through out the school year.  This is a fun, experiential, hands-on workshop, so be prepared to play!

Motivation, Pressure, Competition:

What’s Going On, What’s Really Important and What Can We Do About It.

Be ready to remember what it’s like to be a student and to have your paradigms about motivation, grades and competition challenged.  Through experiential role plays and games, Dr. Jordan will guide you in experiencing the costs to kids when they are constantly pressured about grades, select sports, getting into the “right” secondary school and college, etc.  Participants will take home ideas about how to support students’ intrinsic motivation, replace competition with cooperation, and to value passion where they find it.
